Work Based Assessment

Workplace-Based Assessments (WBA) provide structured feedback during real patient care. They help students develop clinical competence, communication, professionalism, and self-directed learning in authentic settings.

Case Logs
  • Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX): Focused observation of focused clinical encounters.
  • Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS): Assesses procedural competence and safety.
  • Case-Based Discussion (CBD): Evaluates clinical reasoning, decision-making, and evidence use.
  • Multi-Source Feedback (MSF): Assesses professionalism and teamwork from multiple raters.
  • Case Logs: Tracks clinical exposure and reflections.
Process
1Plan: Select appropriate case/procedure and clarify expected outcomes.
2Observe: Faculty observes the encounter or procedure in real time.
3Debrief: Provide immediate feedback—what went well, what to improve.
4Document: Record the assessment, action points, and follow-up needs.
5Follow-up: Repeat WBAs to monitor progress and close feedback loops.
